Ikarus – Andonis Foniadakis: A Dance Evening at Graz Opera High above Crete, Icarus dares to dream of freedom – a flight caught between an irrepressible thirst for adventure and impending doom. The ancient myth in which Icarus flies too close to the sun forms the starting point for this dance piece by the Crete-born choreographer Andonis Foniadakis. It tells of longing and transgression, of the quest for weightlessness and human hubris. An intense, poetic interplay of risk, exhilaration and transience. Andonis Foniadakis captures the essence of the narrative and combines his distinctive movement language with elements of traditional Cretan dance. Driven by the question of how far one can go without failing, he creates a powerful, expansive choreography that seems, for a moment, to suspend time and gravity. It becomes a breathless reminder of just how close freedom and danger lie to one another. ‘I follow the characters’ energy, their emotions, their state of mind, their physical and psychological condition. What fear accompanies them on their flight? What excitement do they feel as they climb? And how devastating must it feel to fail? I try to translate all these sensations into movement,’ says Foniadakis of his work. He is now restaging his internationally acclaimed hit production, which premiered in Hanover, with the dancers of Ballett Graz.
