Rainer Fuchs: Pop Art Looks into the World – Lecture "Pop Art looks out into the world": with this statement, Roy Lichtenstein emphasised Pop Art's connection to reality. The statement also expressed a distinction from and rejection of contemporary abstract painting, which was perceived as hermetic and detached from the world. Everyday life, with its diversity of consumer goods and media, not only shaped the imagery of Pop Art but also influenced its marketing and presentation in museums. As an art movement closely associated with galleries and collectors, Pop Art itself became part of the commercialisation it addressed. This history can be traced through Pop Art collections, such as that of the Museum of Modern Art Ludwig Foundation Vienna (mumok), whose name includes that of the collectors Peter and Irene Ludwig. The lecture explores this history as well as questions surrounding the reception of Pop Art, both in its own time and today.
