Neue Hofkapelle – As You Like It Date: 6 February 2027, 11 am & 3 pm Venue: Café Stolz (in the mirrored foyer of Oper Graz) “As you like it” – wrote William Shakespeare. As you wish. Yet free will is a complicated matter, as it depends on many external factors over which we have only limited influence. Few people expressed this more clearly than Virginia Woolf in her world-famous essay “A Room of One’s Own”, in which she describes what it takes to be free as a human being and, above all, as a woman. In her novel “Orlando”, she gave the title character the freedom to change gender overnight and live through a period of 300 years, beginning in Shakespeare’s lifetime. We accompany Virginia’s and Orlando’s journeys and life stories through the changing times, with music that all three personalities mentioned here – Shakespeare, Woolf and Orlando – might have heard.
