The musical free spirit Telemann continued the long tradition of the scherzi musicali, which provided a strong counterpoint to settings of the Passion and tragedy or to ceremonial music. In his Burlesque de Quixotte, for example, he audibly sends the unfortunate hero into battle against windmills and sets many another folly to music. Musical seriousness did not always take itself as seriously as it sometimes seems today.
